2010 Recipient

Darren is a graduate of Norwood High School. He will be attending Northeastern University in September.  Service, social justice, and leadership are deep rooted in his life. Darren has traveled to El Salvador with a team of doctors, dentists, optometrists, and nurses from the Team Sight and Bite, to provide free medical, dental and eye care to needy Salvadorans. Darren states, “The Team Sight and Bite experience broadened my goals and developed in me an appreciation of extracurricular, academic, and leadership opportunities.

Darren has also served as a Volunteer Ambassador, for the 2004 Democratic National Convention,  assisting  delegates during the week in navigating the city of Boston. Darren was selected by teachers to be trained, peer-role model in the intervention program Mentors In Violence Prevention. The program focuses on teen relationships and domestic violence, race relations, conflict resolution, and school violence. He mentors peers and presents programs to middle school students. Over the last three years Darren has coached basketball for ages 12-14, as well as a third year coach in Norwood Little League Baseball, ages 10-12. Darren states, “Community service has taught me lessons not learned in a classroom.”  He plans to pursue a dream and career goal of working in a government agency.
